According to sources, Mr Sidhu was also displeased with his challenger, Sukhjinder Randhawa, being allocated a vital ministry. Mr Randhawa was a front-runner for the position of Chief Minister, however, he was later demoted to Deputy Chief Minister. "He (Navjot Sidhu) is not furious with me," Mr Channi added.

Given that the Gandhi family had been cautioned - by Amarinder Singh - about naming the former cricketer as Punjab Congress head, Navjot Sidhu's departure is considered as a major setback. Mr Channi also said he will "bring the people of Punjab to Delhi" and sit outside Prime Minister Modi's residence to support the farmers' protest at his press conference.
